If therapy is getting a master’s degree in yourself, then All the Memories That Remain should be on the syllabus … I can’t wait to hear about the lives this book saves. I’ve been seeing this in many fantasy books, and it can break the suspension of disbelief. I’m quite intrigued how this society developed – they have holograms, but no running water or canalization!īut I have to say it really takes me out of the world when we are in a completely different universe, and names and places from our world creep in, without making any sense there. There are no “as you know” type dialogues or info-dumping. It’s all revealed naturally and bit by bit, by letting characters speak as they normally do. Magic mingling with science, and god-like creatures interacting with humans. Different societies (one partly modeled after Ancient Rome!), with their own cultures, languages, values, histories, and politics. Though I did have a couple of issues with the romance itself, in particular with how it started, the book is beautifully written and not easy to predict. This is a story of choices, paths not taken, and unlived lives, that will stay with you long after you reach the last page. Vivid world-building, intriguing characters, and a compelling m/m romance. It’s all been good, but I’ve been craving some nice fantasy, and here it is! Finally! I’ve been reading all Hugo finalist novellas in preparation for my vote, and so far it’s been horror, horror, horror, Lovecraft, some more horror. 5/26/2023 0 Comments Lyddie book coverLeaving her beloved home, Lyddie resolves to return. Why did you pick this format over a more traditional approach such as a novel or novella? Some stories are linked in terms of plot and a few characters appear multiple times. 3024AD: Short Stories Series One, follows an interesting format, with a series of vignettes that take place in the same time and place – space in the distant future – interspersed with a few “Encyclopedia Galactica” entries to fill in backstory. He is also the latest addition to my growing list of fellow Pacific Northwest authors - there must be something about this area to produce so many interesting and talented writers, myself excluded of course □ - so I asked him to answer a few questions about his book, which you can get for free (see below for details)ġ. DES (“The D is for Dean”) Richard is the author of 3024AD: Short Stories Series One, a fascinating look at a future for humanity that resembles a lot of our past (see my review). 5/26/2023 0 Comments Treasure island project gutenbergAll of these books are wonderful to read aloud together. Normally I am not pro-abridged books, but I also think abridged versions can whet the appetite of younger children, who will then be eager to pick up the full length book when they are older. Don't be afraid to start out with an abridged edition. The language, vocabulary and sentence structure may be unfamiliar to children used to contemporary children's literature, but an exciting, suspenseful plot can help to overcome that hurdle. That is because I think these books are especially suited to appeal to today's children. You might notice that my list is heavy on adventure and fairy tales: Verne, Stevenson, Kipling, for example. Here are a few tips to help you get over that hurdle: It's likely that most children ( and parents, too) will find the syntax and vocabulary of older books a little more challenging than their contemporary counterparts. So, I've created a list of 10 books from the 1800s which go beyond well-known names like Alice, Jo March or Tom Sawyer and Huck. After all, there are only so many 100+ year old books that are still worth reading to your children! That said, I have left off the major contenders. Many parents want to read what they consider to be " Classic Children's Books." These 19th century children's books are certainly classic! It is rather difficult to make a list of 19th century books that you haven't heard of. 5/25/2023 0 Comments Bookwanderers seriesBy AUTHOR Jane Austen Eric Carle Lewis Carroll Roald Dahl Charles Dickens Sydney Hanson C.Indestructubles Little Golden Books Magic School Bus Magic Tree House Pete the Cat Step Into Reading Book The Hunger Games By POPULAR SERIES Chronicles of Narnia Curious Geoge Diary of a Wimpy Kid Fancy Nancy Harry Potter I Survived If You Give.
